Road Safety Audits and Accident Investigation
Road safety audits are the examination of existing or future roads and intersections. The examination determines whether or not there are any potential road safety issues, and identifies where there is room for improvement.
When carrying out a safety audit of this nature it is vital that one team member has a Highways Agency approved Certificate of Competence. Charles Thomson, one of our directors, attained his in and is now able to carry out Road Safety Audits on the Trans-European Network or the UK trunk road network.
Novo55 have carried out Stages 1 - 4 Road Safety Audits on local and national roads and our clients have comprised of those from public and private sectors.
Our Director Charles of Highways and Traffic was formerly Manager of Traffic Parking and Road Safety for a city Council in the Northeast of England. He carried out annual reviews of collisions within the city to inform the programme of road safety measures. He also helped North Yorkshire CC review its top 100 collision sites. This allowed him to make recommendations for road improvements where they were likely to deliver a cost effective reduction in collisions.
Questions we ask
When carrying out Road Safety Audits we follow the advice of the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation. We always bear in mind that our recommendations should be proportionate.
- Who can be hurt in a collision on this part of the highway (road in Scotland), and how might that happen?
- What can be done to reduce the potential for that collision, or to limit its consequences?
We recently carried out a Stage 1 Road Safety Audit and Stage 2 Cycle Audit for a section of dualling on the A9, Kincraig to Dalraddy section.
Similarly and again in Scotland, we carried out a Stage 1 and 2 RSA on a proposal for a smaller convenience store accessed from A77. Transport Scotland had approved two Departures in relation to this proposal. Naturally we considered all potential road users.
We carried out Road Safety Audits for a number of private developments, both residential and commercial.
